Buying A Company

We are pleased to help acquire the right, successful fit to your current publishing company or growth strategy.

BACK TO BROKERAGE

To begin, we review the company’s Strategic Plan and listen carefully to what will best fit based on financial, subject, market, distribution, and other factors. In the marketplace, one key (there are many) to a successful acquisition is in the buyer’s ability to achieve synergies with the newly acquired company. The speed and amount of cost savings, increased revenues, and common expense reductions frequently turns an otherwise average acquisition into explosive growth and high margin profitability for the combined enterprise.

Synergies take place in other areas as well: a strong marketing or graphics team, solid Special Sales capabilities in specific subjects, compatible customer lists (a pro choice and an evangelical publisher may be dealing with the same topic, but they are unlikely to have compatible customer lists), expansion into new and related topic areas and/or markets.

To pinpoint and highlight these synergies, NPL will prepare an outline, once a specific acquisition is in mind, of potential synergies and the internal process it will take to achieve them. Factors such as cross-sell, line up-sell, combined customer approach, print run efficiencies, combined administrative expense reduction, and the like all add to the bottom line of the new enterprise. It is the structured approach to ‘capturing’ these benefits that turns a three year hopeful ‘return ON investment’ plan into a confident two year real ‘return OF investment’ achievement.

As well, many companies up for sale have deficiencies in their Marketing Plans. Often, they are old, or don’t fully include the opportunities of the Internet and digital media potentials. One of our jobs is to identify these shortcomings and advise what it takes to fix them, and what can be expected in return for the new owner.

We can also help you acquire a company in Canada or Australia, though not as often, or once in a while, in Europe, if that is your plan. We are “plugged in” to the Canadian publishing market, which is extremely small by U S standards, and operates under some different rules and considerations, through our presence in Montreal.

NPL can aggressively seek out acquisition potentials, or simply add your information to our “Buyer’s Database”, and notify you each time an appropriate candidate becomes available, depending on your situation and requirements.

A final note. More than half of our transactions occur without ever becoming public. So, it is important for you, if you have a plan, to contact us directly, and not wait for ‘listings’, as you’ll miss half or more of the opportunities, at least, that cross our desks.

If you would like us to locate and help you acquire a company, contact us. Don’t postpone the discussion, or tell yourself that all the good publishers are advertised for sale and you’ll find them.

You should contact us today.
